要旨
This study argues that sluicing structures in the wh-in-situ language Turkish are derived by overt focus movement of wh-phrase(s) to SpecCP and successive-cyclic deletion of the domain of each phase throughout the derivation. It is shown that Turkish sluicing structures cannot be reduced to cleft structures as in certain other wh-in-situ languages, with evidence provided from contrasts in sluices and clefts with regard to case-matching, postposition pied-piping, the possibility of adjunct pivots/remnants, and the possibility of multiple sluicing/clefting. The chapter also considers the challenging phenomenon of subject case mismatch in Turkish sluicing structures, where a wh-remnant corresponding to the genitive subject of an embedded clause can only surface with nominative, not genitive, case. The chapter presents an analysis of this phenomenon that uses a modified version of Hiraiwa’s (2001) account of nominative–genitive conversion in Japanese and the multiple Spell-Out model of Minimalism.
