要旨
Over the past few decades, the Japanese language has experienced a noteworthy surge in Western loanwords, wherein English has conspicuously impacted the phonetics, graphics, vocabulary, and grammar of contemporary Japanese. In 1980, American cultural anthropologist Herbert Passin foresaw the complete Westernization of the Japanese language in his publication. This article investigates the reasons behind the non-realization of this prediction, exploring issues pertaining to the rivalry between "Western" and proto-Chinese linguistic forms in modern Japanese. Additionally, it scrutinizes the role of Sino-Japanese elements in the written styles and genres of the language.
