要旨
The Italian missionary Giovanni Battista Sidoti (1667-1714) stowawayed in 1708 to spread Christianity in Japan. However, he was imprisoned after landing on Yakushima and was cross-examined, but the officials did not understand his words and immediately escorted him to Nagasaki.Although the investigation started at the Nagasaki magistrate's office, his words were still unclear, and both the Dutch interpreters and the Dutch of the factory in Dejima said that "they are words that could not be spoken in any language."After that, an interrogation was conducted by Arai Hakuseki (1657-1725) in Edo, and he said, "I can understand his Japanese more than I expected."Furthermore, considering that Hakuseki wrote "Seiy Kibun" based on the information obtained from the missionary, the Japanese spoken by Sidoti, at least in Edo, was not unclear. The purpose of this paper is to clarify as much as possible the language Sidoti was speaking.13
