要旨

This paper aims at revealing the historical interplay of kango( Japanese words of Chinese origin) and wago( native Japanese words) in the history of Japanese lexicon, with a focus on describing the interrelationships between one of kango, "無端", and some of wago. Since the Heian period, "ajikinashi" and "hashinashi" had corresponded to "無端", and in the Middle Ages, influenced by the usage of "無端" in Gozan literature, "hashinashi" distinctively began to express the meaning of "unexpectedness"that "無端" originally has, and with this transition of "hashinashi", "hashitanashi", whose original meaning dose not match "無端", also began to correspond to "無端". The correspondence of these words to "無端" shows a certain of confusion and distinction, depending on the extent of the overlaps between them. In the Edo period, the meaning of "unexpectedness" was recognized in "hashitanashi", which suggests that the mixture of "hashitanashi", "hashinashi" and "無端". In the historical process of the correspondence of "無端" with wago, not only the semantic relations between them but the several kinds of factors, such as notation or word construction, affects at the various levels, and this case can be considered as a suggestive example for the complicated relations between kango and wago.
