要旨
With more vocabulary there will be more comprehension, and with more comprehension there will be more acquisition (Krashen & Terrell, 1983). Hence, putting the focus of teaching on helping students develop lexical competence is critically important. Lexical competence is often defined in terms of vocabulary size (breath) and its usage (depth). This study addresses the question of how to measure lexical competence thus defined, and aim at examining some possible ways of measuring Japanese learners' lexical competence in English.
