シェイクスピア劇翻訳再考 : エリザベス朝の言語と歴史的見地から

要旨

本研究ではシェイクスピアの翻訳を当時の歴史的な脈絡の中で見直し、かつ当時の英語の意味に則して読み直し、新たな翻訳を行うことを目的とした。現在世に出ているシェイクスピアの日本語訳のほとんどは、シェイクスピア劇に通底する時代を超えた価値観に重きを置き、現代の舞台に載ることを念頭に置いているために、当時の歴史的な背景や、現在とは異なる語彙の意味や使い方には十分な配慮が払われてこなかった。そこで、研究メンバーは、今一度数々の英語による注釈付きのバージョンの注と解釈を比較検討し、Oxford English Dictionaryのオンライン版を丁寧に調べることでそれぞれが解釈を行ったうえで、そこから見えてくる歴史的な研究を行うことで、新たな翻訳の作成に臨んだ。 本年度は四大悲劇、『オセロー』『リア王』『マクベス』『ハムレット』を、5回の研究会と1回の翻訳整理の会を通して研究し、翻訳原稿を用意するに至った。方法としては、英国中世史の研究者、神奈川大学名誉教授の石井美樹子氏が訳されたものの見直しを研究会の参加者が徹底的に行うというもので、あらかじめ原稿にコメントや批評、質問を書き込んだものを研究会の開催前に共有し、研究会当日に、石井美樹子氏と埼玉学園大学元教授、米村泰明氏（専門は中世演劇史）からコメントや質問に対する講義を受けながら、翻訳の練り直しを図った。同時にメンバーたちも発表を行った。研究会の参加者は積極的に国内外のシェイクスピアの公演にも足を運び、どのような演出によりシェイクスピアの言語が解釈されているのかを、舞台という実践の現場で調査し、翻訳の参考とした。 3月にはメンバーの一人、拓殖大学名誉教授の伊澤東一氏を講師に迎えてシェイクスピアのテキストの変遷に関する研究会を開催し、3月中に最終原稿を見直す会も予定していたが、コロナウィルスのために研究会は中止となり、遠隔での意見交換となった。 こうして四大悲劇の原稿がそろい、河出書房から2020年度中に『正訳--シェイクスピアの四大悲劇（仮題）』として発刊されることもほぼ決まった。2020年度は、出版に向けて翻訳をさらに見直すと同時に、次の翻訳（『夏の世の夢』『十二夜』『テンペスト』『冬物語』）に取り組んでいく予定である。 The purpose of the research was to interpret and translate the Shakespeare's plays based on the historical background and the definitions of Elizabethan era English words. Most of the Japanese translations of Shakespeare have put emphasis on the relevancy of Shakespeare in the modern times and on the modern performance stage. Consequently they haven't paid appropriate attention to the historical reality and the meaning of the words used in Elizabethan England. The Members of the research group compared different annotated versions of Shakespeare's plays, referring to the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary, and started the historical research of the background of each play. This year we translated Four Great Tragedies, namely Othello, King Lear, Macbeth and Hamlet. We held 5 research meetings and one translation meeting. For each research meeting, we used the translation drafts made by Professor Mikiko Ishii, the Professor Emeritus of Kanagawa University, putting comments, questions and alternative interpretations on each manuscript, and shared those comments and opinions before the meeting. At the meeting, Prof. Ishii gave us her opinions and lectures on questions about the historical and cultural facts during the Shakespeare era. Also Prof. Yasuaki Yonemura, researcher of medieval English drama, gave us lectures concerning the Shakespearean language and performance. Other members also offered short presentations on the play. After those lectures and presentations, we tried to complete the translation of each play. The members also have been to see the stages of Shakespeare plays in and out of Japan to learn how the performance direction interpreted the text. We planned to have a research meeting with Prof. Touichi Izawa, Professor Emeritus of Takushoku University, as the lecturer on the Shakespeare plays in folio and quarto. Unfortunately we had to cancel the meeting due to COVID-19 pandemic. Still we have completed the translations of four tragedies and they will be published in a book form at the end of 2020. In 2020, we will start working on the translations of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, Tempest, Winter's Tale while brushing up the translations of four tragedies for publication.
