要旨
The concept of interrogation, as expressed in typical interrogative sentences, is understood as a combination of the speaker's doubt regarding the propositional content and the act of questioning, as demonstrated in previous studies.Within this framework, interrogative sentences that do not pose a question to the listener, such as Ame ga furudarou ka? ('I wonder if it will rain'), are termed 'doubt interrogatives' in Japanese linguistics. This study examines how speakers express doubt regarding propositional content in interrogative constructions through a contrastive analysis of Turkish and Japanese. It clarifies the similarities and differences between the Turkish adverb acaba, generally understood to indicate speaker doubt, and the Japanese adverb ittai, which appears to signal doubt in interrogative contexts. The findings reveal that while both languages share the common feature of indicating some form of doubt regarding the proposition's content, Turkish acaba functions less as a direct marker of doubt and more as an indication that the speaker is withholding judgment about the proposition.By contrast, the Japanese adverb ittai expresses the speaker's (or viewpoint-holder's) subjective evaluation of the sentence content.Unlike Turkish acaba, the Japanese ittai influences both the sentence-final forms of interrogative sentences and the interpretation of the question itself.
