释 “美"

要旨

Abstract For the character of MEI(美), paleographers have two explanations which are delicacy or decoration. Based on these two explanations, aestheticians and anthropologists hold the views that Chinese aesthetic consciousness originates from taste or visual experience. As culture symbols, the components in MEI mean the law, morality, yin and yang intersection, totem and witchcraft, gravid and birth. It is a misconception that those meanings form MEI are the original meanings from the concept of beauty. In fact, we cannot draw a conclusion that the meaning from the image of a Chinese character is the original meaning of the concept which is recorded by the character.
