Cross-cultural Contacts between Ryukyuans and Euro-Americans in the 19th century (1)－the language problem－

要旨

18世紀末から明治維新までの約70年間に、琉球王国へ欧米の軍艦・商船・調査船・難破船等が約60隻以上も来航または漂着した。琉球を訪れたこれらの欧米人は、それぞれが来航の目的に従って琉球を詳細に観察・調査をしていて、往時の琉球の人と文化を知る貴重な史料となっている。小論では、イギリス人と琉球人の異文化接触の際の言語問題について、これらの史料を基にして論じてみたい。1816年夏の40日余の英・琉間の異文化接触において、イギリス側に２人（クリフオードとフィッシヤー)、琉球側にも２人（真栄平と安仁屋）の者が、それぞれ相手方の未知の言語に大いなる関心を寄せ、お互いの文化を言語を通して理解しようと相互に協力しながら努力した。その結果、琉球における英・琉間の異文化接触では、イギリス人が琉球への来航前中国や朝鮮で遭遇した現地人との衝突を、琉球では回避できただけでなく友好関係を打ち立てることができた。@@@In the first half of the 19th century, about seventy vessels from Europe and the U.S. visited the Kingdom. Those visitors left many accounts on the Ryukyus. These accounts offer us many interesting cases concerning the cross-cultural contacts between the Ryukyuans and Euro-Americans. Among them, the two narratives, written by Basil Hall, R.N. and John M'Leod R.N., are important for the purpose of the present paper. In September, 1816, two British men-of-war visited the Kingdom. The British sailors stayed there about forty days and frequently exchanged official visits with the Ryukyuan authorities, thus establishing friendship with the islanders. Meanwhile, within the two parties, the Ryukyuans and the British, there spontaneously and simultaneously appeared those who endeavoured to master the counterpart's language, English or Ryukyuan. Two British and two Ryukyuans engaged in studying the language seriously. Thanks to their efforts, the friendship of the two parties was further strengthened until the British departure.
