要旨

This study aimed to clarify the issues associated with the declining number of children, the increase in the number of children with multiple disabilities, and the characteristics of hearing impairment in physical education at schools for the deaf (elementary, junior high, and high school). A questionnaire survey targeting 103 schools for the deaf was used, prompting responses from 140 physical education teachers.Based on the results, physical education classes at schools for the deaf are delivered for a small number of students with different grades and for those with multiple disabilities. The results shows that there are restrictions on the types of physical education activities in small classes with hearing impaired students. Physical education teachers at all faculties find it difficult to teach dance and ball movements. In addition, particularly in junior high and high schools, teachers face difficulties in teaching martial arts. Meanwhile, short and long-distance track and field are considered easy to teach for all grades, and net-type ball sports are often practiced in middle and high schools. Regarding instructional ingenuity adapted to hearing impairment, teachers in all faculties considered the use of visual aids and information and communications technology for effective teaching. Meanwhile, regarding the teaching of language concepts, the study found that teachers in each faculties customized their teaching methods according to the educational content and students’ developmental stage.
