要旨
In this paper, we compared the Chinese and Japanese meanings of the word "変化", and considered how the meaning changed in Japan. The Japanese word "変化" came from Chinese. The meaning of the Chinese word "変化" was "change of event" and "change of Buddha". The meaning of the word "変化" in Chinese books was "change of event" and its meaning in Buddhist texts was "change of Buddha". The Japanese word "変化" had the same meaning as the Chinese word "変化". However, in Japan, the word "変化", which means "change of events", was read as "henka", and the word "変化", which means "change of Buddha" was read as "henge". Until the Japanese Chuko period, the meaning of the word "henge(変化)" in Japanese books meant "change of Buddha", the same as in Chinese books, but after the Chusei period in Japan, its meaning changed to "monster" with a negative image.
