要旨
In this paper, I considered the historical change of honorifics, according to the strategy of expressions. From an etymological point of view, the original meaning of the subject honorifics was "giving something from a higher person to a lower person" but not the subject honorific itself. Later, new forms that implied the strategy of indirect descriptions became the subject honorifics; at the same time, expressions which meant "receiving a benefit" were also used as some subject honorifics. The polite style forms (hearer honorifics) originally meant that the speaker was subject to the higher person. Namely, the expression of being under a higher person changed to the hearer-oriented polite form as a style marker. In this grammaticalization to the polite form, it was very important that proto-polite forms were verbs mean "being" which were used in the text many times.
