要旨
This paper examines the representative wakun—the Japanese readings most closely associated with individual kanji, by analyzing Irohajishū(色葉字集) from the Kanji dictionary Rakuyōshū(落葉集), published by the Jesuit Mission in 1598, and compares it with the Japanese iroha-ordered rhyming dictionary Kōyekiirohazatsuinkango( 広益以呂波雑韻刊誤). In the Irohajishū, the kanji are arranged according to their wakun, and only those kanji that were commonly used during that time are selectively included. The wakun provided to the right of each kanji in Irohajishū are generally the representative wakun, strongly associated with the particular kanji. Although Irohajishū is organized by the iroha order, most of its wakun align with those found in the Wagokuhen(倭玉篇),which was compiled during the Muromachi period. The characters in the Wagokuhen are listed based on their dominant component parts. Similarly, this feature is also evident in the Irohajishū, suggesting that the Wagokuhen may have infl uenced its compilation. This infl uence is further demonstrated in the way Irohajishū arranges kanji by radicals within each iroha section. Like Irohajishū, Kōyekiirohazatsuinkango also follows the iroha order for listing kanji. However, whereas Irohajishū organizes kanji based on their dominant components, Kōyekiirohazatsuinkango arranges them by meaning. The difference highlights variations even between dictionaries that employ similar retrieval methods. Additionally, some specialized wakun that do not appear in other Japanese dictionaries but are found in the Irohajishū can also be identifi ed in the following explaination in the Nippo Jisho(日葡辞書), a Japanese-Portuguese dictionary compiled by the Jesuit Missionaries in Nagasaki in 1602. The overlap offers new insights and complementary perspectives for research on the Nippo Jisho.
