要旨

In the previous article (Murata and Iwata, 2001) the authors analyzed and discussed the word formation of Old Japanese adjectives from the following three materials: the Jodai (in and around Nara Period) materials, the Hachidai-shu and Old / Medieval prose works. In Murata and Iwata (2002) the authors listed the adjectives by their word-endings and shows their frequency of use in the Hachidai-shu and 22 Old and Medieval prose works, in order to clarify the historical development of not only each entry word, but also their derivatives and compounds. In this article, the authors have added materials with kunten (guiding marks) to the materials so far discussed in order to make a more comprehensive analysis of the word formation of the Old Japanese adjectives. (NB: Kunten (guiding marks) were added to classical Chinese texts (kanbun) to make them comprehensible to Japanese readers. These marks, which included katakana characters, numbers, symbols for top, middle, and bottom, were inserted between characters or columns to show the reader how to rearrange the text into Japanese syntactic order.)
