要旨

This study examines the handwritten annotations by Wataru Masuda on Lu Xun’s Call to Arms, which were preserved at Kansai University. These annotations, made during Masuda’s time with Lu Xun in 1913, offer unique insights into the text’s nuances, often restoring content omitted or blurred in published versions. This study involves meticulous transcription of Masuda’s notes on works such as Diary of a Madman, Kong Yiji, The New Year’s Sacrifice, and The Comedy of Ducks. The annotations illuminate Lu Xun’s literary genius and provide critical material for studies in literature, linguistics, translation, and modern history. Despite previous studies, the full extent of Masuda’s notes has been difficult to access due to their faint pencil markings. This study transcribes these annotations in detail, creating a foundational resource for future research while addressing ambiguities and seeking scholarly input on unclear sections. It includes textual comparisons with the 1930 Shanghai edition of Call to Arms and relevant Japanese translations to ensure accuracy. This interdisciplinary work sheds light on Sino-Japanese literary exchanges, translation strategies, and the translator’s visibility in cross-cultural interpretations.
