要旨
When English words come into Japanese language as loanwords, their sounds and syllable structures are modified to conform to the constraints of Japanese language. Four groups of such constraints are proposed in this paper. They are the constraints governing syllable structures, transcription of consonants, transcription of vowels, and vowel insertion. The syllable structure constraints must be ranked above the remaining three groups of constraints to achieve optimal forms of loanwords.
