要旨

In Japanese, there are many V-N-type two-character Sino-Japanese verbal nouns, which are composed of a verbal element and a nominal element. This paper addresses “external specification” (Kageyama 1999), the phenomenon where V-N-type two-character Sino-Japanese verbal nouns take arguments whose case marker is identical with the case marker that appears in the corresponding native Japanese verb phrase. For example, the verbal noun zyu-syoo (‘win a prize’), which is paraphrased as syoo-o ukeru (‘win a prize’), can take an extra argument,1 as in Taroo-wa nooberusyoo-o zyu-syoo si-ta (‘Taro won a Nobel Prize’). On the other hand, the verbal noun too-seki (‘throw a stone’), which is paraphrased as isi-o nageru (‘throw a stone’), cannot take an extra argument, as in ??Taroo-wa Ziroo-ni ookii isi-o too-seki si-ta (‘Taro threw a big stone at Jiro’). The aim of this paper is to pinpoint key factors which determine whether V-N-type two-character Sino-Japanese verbal nouns can take extra arguments. I will argue that one of the key factors is the level of specificity of the nominal components contained in the V-N-type two-character Sino-Japanese verbal noun in question.
