要旨
This paper explores the evolution of the concept of "信"(XIN) as one of the criteria in translation within the context of modern translation history. This study specifically examines the Yan Fu's interpretation of XIN as discussed in Tianyan Lun, Lu Xun's perspective on XIN, and the initial application of "诚"(CHENG), as depicted in the Yuwai Xiaoshuo Ji. This study argues that achieving formal equivalence, referred to as XIN, translators need to have sufficient language proficiency and relevant knowledge, while readers must be adequately prepared in their understanding of foreign cultures and in their ability to correspond between their native language and foreign languages. On the contrary, attaining dynamic equivalence, termed CHENG, does not require any linguistic preparation. Yan Fu's concept of XIN in Tianyan Lun emphasizes formal equivalence, while Lu Xun's notion of CHENG in Yuwai Xiaoshuo Ji emphasizes content equivalence. With the expansion of translation practices and debates on translation methodologies, XIN has gradually emerged as one of the acknowledged translation standards in China.
