要旨
This essay reflects on my career as a field linguist who has consistently followed a diagonal path rather than the traditional trajectory of long-term, place-based fieldwork. My research has focused on the phonetics and phonology of Ryukyuan languages, combining instrumental phonetic methods with descriptive and typological perspectives. Shaped by shifting interests and life circumstances, I have often questioned whether I fit the mold of a “typical” fieldworker. Through episodes of hesitation, detour, and self-doubt, I have come to see my unconventional path as a personal way of sustaining field research. By reexamining what it means to “do fieldwork,” this essay contributes to a broader understanding of diversity and alternative approaches in field linguistics.
