せていきたいと思っています。 extensive research on Japanese dialects in the Department of Language Change and Variation and by the compilation of large-scale corpora in the Department of Corpus Studies.These projects are primarily concerned with the practical facet of language use.In fact, NINJAL has long played a pioneering role in developing statistical and computational methods for analyzing massive amounts of language data.By contrast, particularly innovative approaches in NINJALʼs 64-year history are exemplified by the research projects based on general linguistic theories that are conducted in the Department of Linguistic Theory and Structure, and by the typological and contrastive studies in the Department of Crosslinguistic Studies.These studies primarily aim at clarifying the abstract linguistic faculty of Japanese speakers.The four research departments, which carry out their projects hand in hand with each other, have a common interest in applying their outcomes to the teaching and learning of the Japanese language.Working in cooperation with the four research departments, the Center for JSL Research and Information brings forth materials that will contribute to the improvement of Japanese-language education for foreign learners by combining NINJALʼs traditional methods of JSL research with new communicative approaches to second language acquisition.Previous studies on language have focused on past and present language data.The 2011 disasters, however, taught us to develop a new perspective that will lead to the solid future of Japanese.With rapid changes expected to happen to the natural and living environments in Japan, NINJAL is determined to contribute to a better future for our language, with broad support from the general public as well as from researchersʼ communities.
