"Portuguese merchants and captains, as well as Europeanmissionaries, mainly Jesuits, made of Nagasaki a truly individualplace in early modern Japan. As the Christian centre in the territory,the town conceived according to Portuguese urbanistic premises,soon became an important artistic centre, both for the exportationof namban art, as for its production."
