要旨
This paper examines the adaptation of front rounded vowels of German loanwords into Japanese. Japanese lacks front rounded vowels and does not incorporate these foreign sounds into its native phonological system. This raises the question of how Japanese adapts the front rounded vowels (henceforth called umlaut) of borrowed words.
