要旨

2. Following a case grammar model, a sentence consists of two components: Modality (M) and Proposition (P), and negation together with tense, aspect, mood and modal auxiliary verbs belongs to M Component. Whether it is termed as M or AUX, it is to be noted that this component is generally incorporated into the Verboid1 (V) of the sentence when it comes up onto the surface. This means that in the surface structure, NEG as an element of M is found generally in the group of words that make up the V. It is the case that sentential NEG is generally attracted to the V of the sentence in both English and Japanese.
