Both of the verbal suffixes-TA and-RU in Japanese are used to refer to a situation in past, present, or future time. Nevertheless, they are frequently glossed as past and nonpast tenses, respectively, mainly because they refer only to past or nonpast time in mono-clausal sentences in isolation.
