A Panphonic Version of the Text of 'The North Wind and the Sun' for the Illustration of the IPA of Japanese (Tokyo Dialect) Consonants.

要旨

The text of ‘The North Wind and the Sun’ used to illustrate Japanese in the Handbook of the International Phonetic Association 1999 has been revised into a panphonic one. This panphonic version is so devised as to embrace most of the major allophones of all the consonants in Japanese (Tokyo dialect). Prior to this task, the descriptions of consonant phonemes and allophones in the illustration for Japanese were closely analyzed, and those allophones which should have been included in the text for recording were sought. To prepare the new text, the English text given in the Principle of the International Phonetic Association 1949 was translated into Japanese which is reasonably natural to adult and plain enough even to children, and yet as close as possible to the original in wording and syntax. Such a panphonic version of the recording text will serve as a highly effective auditory help to the reader.
