Effects of Narcissistic Tendencies on Shame-coping Styles and Stress Responses:The Mediating Role of Self-Compassion

This study examined how narcissistic tendencies influence cognitive appraisal, shame-coping strategies (Attack Other, Attack Self, Withdrawal), and stress responses in public (with others present) or private (one-on-one) situations, with self-compassion (SC) as a mediator. Among 415 students, grandiosity more strongly predicted the use of Attack Other and stress responses in public situations. Vulnerability increased stress responses via Attack Self and Withdrawal in both situations, and via threat appraisal leading to Attack Other in private situations. Grandiosity positively predicted SC, whereas vulnerability negatively predicted it. SC reduced stress responses by decreasing the use of Attack Self and Withdrawal, but not Attack Other.
