要旨
In considering methods for visually representing the Japanese language, it is necessary to observe and analyze language units as the word (go), sentence (bun), and text (tekisuto). This paper focuses on the word, using primarily the Manyōshū as the object of observation. Since the ultimate objective is to construct a pan-historical model for understanding the visual representation of the Japanese language, I also consider the visual representation of language in the Heike Monogatari. From this analysis, the concepts of the Sinograph, Sino-Japanese vocabulary, logographic representation (hyōi), phonographic representation (hyōon), and orthographic system (hyōkitai) are likely to be the foundation of a pan-historical model. These findings suggest that understanding the visual representation of words requires attention to how Sinographs and Chinese-derived vocabulary function across different representational modes-both logographic and phoneticand how orthographic conventions evolve across historical periods. Such an analysis provides crucial insights into the fundamental mechanisms by which the Japanese writing system developed and stabilized.
