要旨
Toyama and Sakurai (2001) reported self-enhancement in the context of agreeableness and conscientiousness among Japanese students, while they observed self-effacement in the context of extraversion and openness. However, their study did not include standardized scales or report the age of the participants. In the present study, self-enhancement and self-effacement in the Big Five personality traits were investigated among a wider age range of participants to conceptually replicate the previous study. In addition to extraversion and openness, self-effacement was newly observed in neuroticism. In contrast to the previous study, there was no self-enhancement in agreeableness and conscientiousness. There were no significant changes in self-enhancement or self-effacement by age group. These results raised doubts about the robustness of the findings of Toyama and Sakurai (2001).
