要旨

Objective: There has been limited research on the relationship between self-compassion, rumination, and depression in adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Therefore, this study’s primary objective was to examine a theoretical model in which self-compassion has both a direct effect on depression and an indirect effect through rumination in adults with ADHD. Additionally, this study aimed to elucidate the differences in self-compassion, rumination, and depression between adults with ADHD and those without ADHD.Method: A web-based questionnaire survey on self-compassion, rumination, and depression was administered to 160 Japanese adults with ADHD and 160 Japanese adults without ADHD.Results: Structural equation modeling (SEM) demonstrated that self-compassion was negatively associated with depression in adults with ADHD. Furthermore, the indirect effect of self-compassion on depression through rumination was significant in adults with ADHD. The t-test showed that self-compassion was significantly lower in adults with ADHD. In contrast, rumination and depression were significantly higher in adults with ADHD than those without.Discussion: Enhancing self-compassion is a potentially effective approach to improving the mental health of adults with ADHD by reducing rumination, which, in turn, may alleviate depression.
