OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the primary psychosocial work environment related to presenteeism stratified by sex. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze the relationship between the psychosocial work environment and presenteeism among 12,526 Japanese employees. RESULTS: Multiple regression analysis adjusted for attributes and health problems showed that presenteeism was related to all items of the task- and workgroup-level job resources, especially task-level job resources, such as suitable jobs and career opportunities strongly, for both sexes. The magnitude of the associations with each item was stronger for men than for women. Several items of job demands were slightly related to presenteeism only for men. CONCLUSIONS: The primary psychosocial work environment related to presenteeism was task-level job resources for both sexes, and the magnitude of each relationship was stronger for men than women.
