要旨
This study examined how sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), a temperamental trait reflecting heightened sensitivity to environmental stimuli, is associated with perceptions of sexism and ageism through two surveys conducted with Japanese women and older adults. Study 1 targeted Japanese women (N = 300) and examined the association between SPS and perceived sexism while controlling for female identity, mental health, loneliness, self-esteem, and demographic variables. Study 2 targeted Japanese older adults aged 65 years and above (N = 300) and examined the association between SPS and perceived ageism, controlling for old-age identity and the same covariates. Results indicated that SPS was not significantly associated with perceived sexism but positively associated with perceived ageism even after adjusting for the control variables. These results indicate that SPS appears to play a particularly important role in contexts characterized by subtle and everyday social messages rather than overt prejudice. These findings have important applied implications for ageism reduction interventions, suggesting that efforts should focus on improving social and interpersonal environments in addition to encouraging older adults to cope with ageist experiences.
