The Influence of Gesture During the Presentation on Intercultural Learners

In this paper, the authors reflect on how a lecturer's cross-cultural behaviors affect learners from across cultures during online and in situ teaching sessions. The study extends to survey the way learners feel about cultural differences during a presentation from the research based on sociolinguistics research. The sociolinguistics research that becomes the base of our study results from a survey on linguistic behaviors difference between Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and American people. In our study, we compared our results conducted in Korean universities with the ones derived from sociolinguistics research to verify if there is consistency between the two. Before starting full-scale research, a preliminary study has been conducted to base the initial experiment. Selected gestures have been chosen, and a questionnaire has been created together with some presentations. By the results of this experiment, the experimental premise stating that “the difference in intercultural behavior influences learners” has been proved as correct.
