On Strong Distinctness

要旨

This paper is an attempt to derive a strong version of Distinctness from Richards’s (2000, 2010) original one that bans structurally identical elements within a phase. It demonstrates that this line of approach has many desirable consequences. Among them are (ⅰ) Anti-locality constraints including Grohmann’s (2003) CDE (Condition on Domain Exclusivity) turn out to be a subcase of the strong Distinctness, (ⅱ) arbitrary statements germane to the Locality approach (Saito 1985, Miyagawa and Arikawa 2007, etc.) to the FNQ-constructions in Korean (and Japanese) are discarded, and (ⅲ) Chomsky’s (1995) claim of “no A-movement traces” finds its theoretical ground within the minimalist framework.
