The Grammaticalization of final particles

要旨

Abstract This article discusses issues relevant to the grammaticalisation of final particles. It considers several attested pathways by which final particles arise, bringing data from case studies in Japanese and English. This analysis focuses on contemporary synchronic data rather than historical data and on the crucial interactional and prosodic factors involved in the emergence of final particles. It discusses the factors that must be taken into consideration in our endeavour to understand the grammaticisation of these fascinating and highly interactional forms.
