要旨

This paper examines the intellectual trajectory of Japanese social science through the "overseas experience" of economist Shizuta Hitoshi in colonial Korea. While Shizuta is well-known for his institutional contributions as the first Dean of the Faculty of Economics at Kyoto University under the postwar New University System, his earlier career at Keijō/Gyeongseong Imperial University remains largely overlooked. This study explores this neglected chapter, revealing Shizuta's extensive involvement in imperial management and wartime economic mobilization. In the colonial frontier, he was tasked with addressing diverse issues ranging from agrarian and financial problems in Korea to industrial construction in Manchuria and the rearrangement of supply chains in Southeast Asia during the Pacific War.These practical duties-encompassing fieldwork and statistical analysis-stood in stark contrast to his later theoretical focus on crisis theory and imperialism. The paper argues that Shizuta's postwar silence regarding these activities reflects a broader structural rupture within Japanese social science.By analyzing Shizuta's transition from an engaged colonial practitioner to a postwar academic leader, this essay illuminates the "intellectual void" created by the empire's collapse.Ultimately, it suggests that confronting this discontinuity is essential for re-evaluating the role and responsibility of social science within East Asia's contemporary geopolitical landscape.
